Principal's Message

October/November 2017

"I'm so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers."
Anne of Green Gables

Hello Trojans and Families!

As I sit here writing this article, the wind has picked up, the leaves are dancing down the street and I swear I can smell pumpkin spice in the air. Fall has truly arrived!

It is hard to believe that September is behind us. It was a hectic month, as all Septembers are, and I want to thank our staff - our caretakers, support staff, teachers and our administrative team- for working so hard to get students settled into their new classes and, for our new Trojans, their new school. In schools we basically open and close a business on an annual basis and this is no small task. I cannot say enough about the team that we have at Bowness.

I want to invite all parents and guardians to come out and support your students through adding your voice to our School Council meetings. The next meeting is on November 8th at 6:30 in our cafeteria. All are welcome!

Bowness is a busy place. We have our Fine Arts Department readying students for upcoming shows and concerts in drama, dance, art and music. Our Athletics Department is buzzing with 4 volleyball teams, girls' soccer, 2 football teams and cross-country running already started and swimming beginning the first week of October. Our clubs are up and running so if your student is looking to get involved, just have them pop by the office and we can ensure they are aware of all of their options. Our Culinary kitchen is bubbling with excitement and putting out amazing, healthy lunches (and they cater as well!). Our High Performance Athlete Development (HPAD) Pathway is being piloted this year with 46 students participating. Our phones have already started ringing with hopeful grade 9s looking for a spot in the HPAD pathway for next year. We are planning 3 trips this school year with our Music Department heading to Victoria, a trip to Berlin, Prague and Budapest open to all students, and another group of students heading to Finland with our partner school, Robert Thirsk High School. Our Pre-Engineering classes are partnering with the University of Calgary's Schulich School of Engineering to enhance the work our students are doing in the classroom. Our Mechanics and Cosmetology courses are accepting clients so if you need a brake job or a new style, please give us a call. I could literally go on and on but I hope you get a sense of some of the educational opportunities we are providing our students.

I want to ensure all stakeholders are aware of the multiple layers of supports we have for your student. Teachers are flexible and focused on your student's success in classes. Our Student Services team is there to handle any socio-emotional supports or career advice that students may need. Our administrative team is here to support your student in making good choices for their academic success. There is a large team assembled to do all we can to help your student grow as an academic, an athlete, an artist, a creator, and, most importantly, as a person. Thank you sincerely for entrusting your child to us.

I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. I, for one, have much to be thankful for and being a part of the Bowness team is certainly high on my list.
