Students enrolled in all music sequences at Lord Beaverbrook have numerous mandatory and optional opportunities for performance, including: festivals, and professional clinics/workshops with musicians from around the globe. In addition, all music students have the opportunity to travel provincially, nationally, and internationally during their time at LBHS. It is possible for students to be involved in both band and choir. Please see the music directors for more information.

Instrumental Music

Instrumental Music

Students enrolled in this sequence will develop their knowledge and technical abilities relating to their specific instrument. Students participate in group, individual and guest musician instruction to gain understanding of musical concepts and techniques. Students choose either Brass & Woodwind or Percussion. This class is located inside of a student’s regular timetable. Students co-register in the appropriate Instrumental Music 15, 25, or 35.

It is recommended that students have a basic understanding of their chosen instrument and the ability to read standard music notations and musical concepts before entering this sequence. A general fee is associated with this course.

Instrumental Music – Symphonic Band

Student who enter this sequence are also registered in Instrumental Music – Brass/Woodwinds and Percussion 10, 20, 30. Students enhance their technical and musical skills while playing in an ensemble. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable (in the morning) to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.

Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.

Choral Music

Students who wish to understand singing and music in greater depth enroll in this sequence. Students develop vocal and general music fundamentals.

This course is intended for students who have a basic-intermediate understanding of singing. There is a general fee associated with this course.

Music – Concert Choir

Concert Choir

Students who enter this sequence enhance their technical and vocal musical skills while performing in an ensemble. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable (in the morning) to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.

It is recommended that students have a basic understanding of singing before entering this sequence. Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.

Instrumental Jazz

Students who want the opportunity to advance their skills, knowledge, and appreciation of the jazz idiom enroll in this sequence. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.

Students must be enrolled in Instrumental Music or have Music Department approval to enter this sequence. Students gain Lord Beaverbrook Music Department approval before entering Jazz 25 and 35. Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.

Vocal Jazz

Students who want the opportunity to advance their skills, knowledge, and appreciation of the pop and jazz idioms as well as to sing difficult close harmonies enroll in this sequence. Courses are offered outside of a student’s regular timetable (after school) to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.

Students must audition and gain Lord Beaverbrook Music Department approval before entering this sequence. Students are required to participate in all rehearsals and performances. There is a general fee associated with this course.

General Music – Recording Studio

Students excited about developing audio recording techniques enrol in this sequence. Facilitated by a professional, in our state-of the art Recording Studio, these courses are suitable for those who can sing or play an instrument. This course meets 3 mornings/week at 7:30 am to allow students to engage in multiple Fine and Performing Arts courses.

Students gain Lord Beaverbrook Music Department approval before entering this sequence. There is a general fee associated with this course.

Professional Development in the Arts 35

Grade 12 students who are preparing for a career in the Fine and Performing Arts and who would like to explore the Arts to a higher level of professionalism should enroll in this course. In a dynamic group setting, students learn the processes of resume writing, portfolio creation, creating contacts in the arts, marketing and project creation.

Fine and Performing Arts High School Certificate

This certificate is awarded to students of Lord Beaverbrook High School who complete a majority of complementary courses in the Fine and Performing Arts and specified Career and Technology courses. Students are awarded the Fine and Performing Arts Certificate at their grade 12 graduation ceremonies and are identified by wearing a red sash. Students wishing to pursue this Certificate should talk to their guidance councillor for more information.

Requirements:

Total of 40 credits which include:

  • Professional Development in the Arts 35 Course (5 credits)
  • 35 Credits in complementary courses in a student’s area(s) of interest from the list below
