CALM stands for "Career And Life Management"

CALM is a 3 credit, single term, compulsory health and career based course that all students must complete for graduation. The Career and Life Management curriculum will provide a means of challenging you to acquire the skills and information necessary to shape your own life and contribute constructively to society.

Rationale and Philosophy

The aim of senior high school Career and Life Management (CALM) is to enable students to make well-informed, considered decisions and choices in all aspects of their lives and to develop behaviours and attitudes that contribute to the well-being and respect of self and others, now and in the future. CALM is the core course for health literacy at the senior high school level in Alberta.

At Sir Winston Churchill, the curriculum for this course is offered for students to take in 2 different formats. Emphasis is placed on individual decision making and goal setting throughout the CALM course.

Course Information

CALM is a compulsory course and is typically completed in grade 11. This course will contain one optional theme: Human Sexuality.

We recognize that students often have very busy course loads. Thus, we have given students a choice in how they take CALM.

There are 2 ways to take the course:

  1. Classroom Format- students attend classes 5 days a week
  2. Online "Blended" Format- students complete all assignments online and meet at least once a week during lunch hour with their teacher

Detailed course information can be found in our Course Planning Guide.
