SWC School Council Meetings

The School Council Executive welcomes all parents and students to school council meetings

We want to work with you to enhance our children's education through participation in the school and communication with the school leaders. We would like to hear your ideas and thoughts and invite you to attend our School Council meetings.

As in past years, we want to keep our meetings short and bring you presentations that will contribute to our students success in school and in their future. We have the following presentations scheduled and we would like to listen to  your suggestions for the meetings. Meetings are generally the first Wednesday of the month at 7:00 pm. Please check the main page - upcoming events for meeting details.

If  you have any ideas about presentations you consider interesting please send them to swcschoolcoundil@gmail.com

Casino Update

Want to volunteer? Our upcoming Casino will be in the fall of 2018. There are three shifts per day; daytime, evening and late evening (count room). You will receive a meal, drinks and snacks while you are there. We need 40 volunteers for this fundraiser. A typical Casino will raise $80,000 for our school. This goes to support all the programs at our school, whether it’s for microscopes to football equipment. It’s spread around so all the students and teachers benefit. If this is something you would like to help with, please contact Sue Walters at walterss@shaw.ca. We appreciate all those who help out.”

Warm Regards,
Sue Walters

To date we have spent approximately $48,000 of casino funds on the following items:  Band trip; display panels for Fine Arts; field hockey equipment; various supplies for the Science program (including microscopes), volleyball equipment, construction technology, German language and math supplies.

Thanks to all the parent volunteers who helped out at the SWC Casino in December 2014, we received $77,392.66 from the AGLC.

The Casino Summary was approved at the May 6, 2015 meeting and outlines the proposed spending of these funds.  The report also shows a final summary of spending from the 2012 casino. Please click here to see the Casino Summary.

The next casino is anticipated for 4th quarter 2016 to be held at the Elbow River Casino.

What is the School Council?

The Sir Winston Churchill School Council is the parent organization associated with the school - all parents of students in the school are members of the school council. The role of the school council is to provide an avenue for parents to communicate with the school administration regarding education issues and to provide opportunities for parents to become informed about topics related to SWC and education in general.

Format

Generally, the school council meets monthly, usually the first Wednesday evening of each month, at 7:00pm, in the school library. A small executive (chair, secretary and treasurer) draws up the monthly agenda, as well as plans for the year in terms of monthly presentations. Other important volunteer positions for the school council include key communicator and volunteer coordinator. All positions are open to any parent in the school, and elections are held at the AGM in September for open positions. The meetings are basically an information sharing evening, with reports from the administration, a teacher representative, the key communicator and the band parents association and usually a presentation of interest to parents. All parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the meetings.

Past Involvement/Projects

Presentations at the school council meeting have, in the past, included topics such as safety and security at SWC, scholarships, exam preparation, athletics at SWC, graduation, curriculum specific talks, careers, preparing for university and technology. Guest presenters have included representatives from various levels of the CBE, and government representatives.
The school council has also supported some parent-driven initiatives with concerns about specific issues such as changes to the diploma exam schedules and the elimination of the general school fee.

Finances

The school council operates with a fairly small budget; a $5.00 donation is requested from all parents at the beginning of the year, and this nets about $7000.00 - 8000.00 for the year. These funds are used in support of student clubs and other ventures as well as school council sponsored events like staff appreciation events. A small amount of money is also set aside to aid students who couldn’t otherwise participate in events (for example, grad banquet tickets).

In 2013-14, the School Council supported many activities including Halloween Week, Winter Wonder Week, Connections, Smart Grad, Carnival Youth Week and Grade 12 BBQ (all Student Leadership), Grad Committee (tassels), Staff Appreciation Lunch and the Dom Chieffo Memorial Fund.

SWC Parent Association

The parent association is an independent society which is responsible for fundraising activities, primarily the casino.
