The Pure Mathematics 10-20-30 sequence is designed for students with an interest and aptitude in mathematics who are intending to pursue post-secondary studies at a university or in a mathematics-intensive program at a technical collage. Pure Math emphasises mathematical  theory and the use of algebra and graphing to solving problems. Pure Math 30 is required for any calculus course in high school or post-secondary institution. As per Alberta Learning's requirements, anyone wishing to receive a grade 12 diploma must obtain at least 10 credits in mathematics.

Pure Mathematics 10 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Mathematics 9 (65%+ recommended) Course Guide

Good background in mathematical skills, basic algebra, and good problem solving skills will be needed for this course, the first in a sequence intended for academically inclined students. Topics include sequences and series, the real numbers, functions and relations, coordinate geometry, polynomials and rational expressions, trigonometry, statistics and probability. Expressing ideas clearly in writing with correct terminology is emphasized. This is a very academic program leading to Pure Math 30.

Pure Mathematics 20 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Pure Mathematics 10 (50%+) Course Guide

Students study systems of equations, quadratic functions, quadratic and polynomial equations, functional analysis, mathematical reasoning, circle geometry, coordinate geometry, and personal finance. This course deals mainly with pure mathematics and is theoretical in nature. Expressing ideas clearly in writing with correct terminology is emphasized.

Pure Mathematics 30 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Pure Mathematics 20 (50%+) Course Guide

Students study transformations, trigonometric functions, logarithmic and exponential functions, quadratic relations, permutations and combinations, and statistics. A Provincial Diploma Examination written at the conclusion of this course accounts for 50% of the mark awarded in the course. Math 30 is a prerequisite for entrance into most programs at the University of Calgary.

Mathematics 31 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Pure Math 30 (60%+), Pure Math 30 may be taken at the same time as Math 31

This course is for students who wish to get an introduction to Calculus. It is intended for students who will pursue more education in mathematics, engineering  or science at university. Students must possess a high degree of motivation towards mathematics, have excellent work habits, and have a very strong math background. Content includes limits, derivatives, integration and applications.
