English Language Arts 30

English Language Arts 30-1 - 5 Credits
Prerequisite: ELA 20-1 – 65% minimum is strongly recommended

Every effort is made to recommend the appropriate course for each student. Students should follow teacher recommendations. A mark of 65% or better in ELA 20-1 is needed for success at he next level. It must be understood that the student will be expected to write the final exam for the course registered and that the provincial diploma examinations in English Language Arts will make up 50% of the final mark.

ELA 30-1 is a very intense and challenging course for students planning to attend post-secondary or with a strong interest in English Language Arts. The amount of reading required for success in this course mandates a strong work ethic. Students in this course will be expected to study a variety of texts including a Shakespearean play. In response to literature and other texts students in ELA 30-1 are required to respond in a personal and critical/analytical manner, with emphasis on critical responses, using various forms of prose, poetry, script and oral/visual/ multimedia presentations.

English Language Arts 30-2 -5 Credits
Prerequisite: ELA 20-1 or ELA 20-2

Students in this course will be expected to study a variety of texts including a feature film and popular non-fiction. In response to literature students in ELA 30-2 are required to respond in a personal manner to literature and a personal and critical manner to other texts using various forms of prose, poetry, and oral/visual/ multimedia presentations. Informative and persuasive writing is emphasized along with a strong oral and visual component. This course is strongly recommended for students who have completed ELA 20-1 but may have experienced difficulty in the process. Please note that 50% of the final course mark is determined by a diploma examination mandated by Alberta Learning. A strong work ethic and commitment to individual learning is necessary in order to be successful in this course.
