The music program at Lester B. Pearson includes four areas of instruction. Instrumental, choral, and electro-accoustic music courses are offered, in conjunction with a performance based program. Students registered in instrumental and choral music classes are expected to involve themselves in the performance courses (Music 15/25/35) which meet outside the regular timetable.

Instrumental Music 10/20/30 | Concert Band, Jazz Band, Ensembles | Choral 10 | Choral 20 | Choral 30 | Vocal Jazz | Musical Theatre


Instrumental Music 10/20/30 - 5 credits each

These courses are for students interested in pursuing studies in instrumental music. The course will include all aspects of playing a wind or percussion instrument, as well as the developing of tone, range and flexibility. The music performed will be selected from a variety of periods and styles. The course will also include theoretical materials as they pertain to the music; computer utilization will be a component in this program. Students, who do not have grade 9 Band, may be considered if they possess equivalent experience. All students enrolled in the Music program are expected to be involved in the performance-based course, (Concert Band), which meets outside of the regular timetable.

Concert Band , Junior & Senior Jazz, Ensembles
Co-requisite: Instrumental Music 10/20/30

These performance-based courses meet outside of regular class time and do not affect your course choices with the regular timetable. The performing groups include concert band, jazz bands and possible small ensembles.

This course is offered for either 3 or 5 credits and is graded separately from the co-requisite course you are registered in.

Choral 10 - 5 Credits
No Prerequisite

This course is designed for students interested in developing singing skills in a variety of settings, from full class to small groups or solos. The repetoire includes music selections from classical, rock and musical theatre. Choral 10 will be offered be offered in the regular timetable on a semester basis. These students are expected to register in Choral 15, outside the timetable, for an additional 5 credits.

Choral 20 - 5 Credits
Prequisite: Choral 10 or permission of the music teachers

Choral 20 will be offered in the regular timetable as a semester course. In addition, Choral 20 students are expected to register in Concert Choir (Choral 25), which is held one morning and one lunch hour for an additional 5 credits.

Choral 30 - 5 Credits
Prequisite: Choral 20 or permission of the music teachers

This course is desgned for students interested in developing singing skills in a variety of settings, from solo to small group or full class. Choral 30 will be offered in the regular timetable as a semester course. In addition, Choral 30 students are expected to register in Concert Choir (Choral 35) that is held one morning and one lunch hour for an additional 5 credits.

Vocal Jazz 15/25/35 - 5 Credits

This performing group is made up of auditioned singers who are also part of the Choral 10/20/30 program. The focus is on Jazz styles of singing.

Musical Theatre 15/25/35 - 5 credits each
Prerequisite: Permission of the Musical Theatre teachers or compleation of a course(s) in the performing arts, including drama, music, and dance.

Musical Theatre is a broad-based course offering performing opportunities in the combined fields of music, drama and dance. This semester course will be offered in the regular timetable, but it must be noted that extra-curricular rehearsals will be an expectation. A primary goal of this course will be to perform a musical comedy or revue.
