Sciences

Science 10 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: A minimum of 50% in Science 9. A mark of 60% or better in both Science 9 and Math 9 is recommended.

Science 10 is an integrated academic science course designed as a continuation of the junior high school Science program. Low marks in the first three weeks of Science 10 may result in a transfer to Science 14. The common themes of "energy, change and matter" are covered by topics such as biology, chemical reactions, physics of motion, and weather. Successful completion of Science 10 is a pre-requisite for all 20-level courses.

Science 14 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Less than 50% in Grade 9 Science

Science 14 is designed, as a continuation of the junior high school Science program for those students with a Science 9 mark is less than 50%. The course consists of a large number of lab activities and is oriented to relate to students' lives. Topics of study include household science (chemistry), human body systems, weather and the environment. Students who have teacher recommendation and 85% in Science 14 may take Science 10.

Science 24 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Science 14

Science 24 is oriented to relate to students' lives. Topics of study include disease, energy use, safe driving and chemistry. Completion of Science 24 fulfils the Science requirements for an Alberta High School Diploma. Students who have a final mark of 85%, have received teacher and Science curriculum leader recommendation, and have completed two Science 10 remedial work packages, one of which must be Chemistry, may register in Science 20. Students with 65% as a final mark in Science 24 and have teacher recommendation may also register for Science 10 (if class sizes permit).

Taking 30-level courses in Grade 11 - 30-level courses are for grade 12 students.

Historically, students enrolled in 30-level sciences in grade 11 are not as successful as those who enrol in grade 12. However, one 30-level Science course (Physics, Chemistry, or Biology) may be taken in grade 11 if the student has an 85%+ average in the prerequisite course, providing there is space available in the requested course. Pure Math 20 recommended as a prerequisite or co-requisite. Chemistry students without this are at a disadvantage. If taking Physics 30 in grade 11, a strong algebra background is recommended.

Note: a 30 level course can only be repeated at Pearson following a Special Cases request.

Science 20 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science 10 and Pure or Applied Math 10

Science 20 is an integrated science course designed for academic students who want to be scientifically literate but do not intend to pursue a science-related post-secondary education. The common theme of "change" is explored in units dealing with ecology, chemistry, physics and biology. The emphasis in this course is on "breadth rather than depth" as topics covered have less detail than in the individual science disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.

Biology 20 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science 10.
Chemistry 20 is recommended as a co-requisite.

Biology 20 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue a biology related post secondary education. Such students should consider taking chemistry courses as well. The theme of "matter and energy flow" is covered through topics of human systems, photosynthesis, cellular respiration and ecology. There will be a small field trip fee.

Chemistry 20 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science 10.
Pure Math 20 is recommended as a co-requisite.

Chemistry 20 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue biology, chemistry or physics related post secondary education. The theme of "matter and chemical change" is covered through such topics as atom models, bonding, solutions, gases, stoichiometry, and organic chemistry.

Physics 20 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science 10.
Pure Math 10 is recommended as a co-requisite.

Physics 20 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue chemistry or physics related post secondary education. The theme of "interaction of matter and energy" is covered through topics such as graphing motion, forces and vectors, circular motion, gravitation, waves and light.

MOVING FROM CHEMISTRY 20 TO SCIENCE 30 - Students whose Chemistry 20 marks are between 50-55% should seriously consider taking Science 30 instead of Chemistry 30 as their chances of success will be greatly improved. Science 30 topics cover less depth and have lower math skills requirements. Course emphasis is on the environment. Science 30 is approved for university entrance for those students not planning a science-related post secondary education. Biology and physics topics in Science 30 do not rely on knowledge from Science 20.

Science 30 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Science 20 and Math 20 Pure or Applied

Science 30 is an integrated science course designed for academic students who want to be scientifically literate but do not intend to pursue a science-related post-secondary education. The common theme of "environment" is explored in units dealing with topics such as human systems, acid-base chemistry, organic chemistry, electromagnetic radiation, and energy resources. The emphasis in this course is on "breadth rather than depth" as topics covered have less detail than in the individual sciences of biology, chemistry and physics. Science 30 is accepted for entrance to all Alberta universities, Mount Royal College and is the prerequisite for many courses at S.A.I.T. and N.A.I.T. A diploma exam worth 50% of the final course mark will be written.

Biology 30 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Biology 20.
Chemistry 20 is recommended as a co-requisite.

Biology 30 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue a biology related post secondary education. Such students should seriously consider taking chemistry courses as well. The theme of "equilibrium" is covered through topics such as genetics, human system (nervous, endocrine, reproductive) and populations. A diploma exam worth 50% of the final course mark will be written.

Chemistry 30 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Chemistry 20.
Math 20 Pure is recommended as a co-requisite.

Chemistry 30 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue biology, chemistry or physics related post secondary education. The theme of "matter, energy change and chemical change" is covered through such topics as redox systems, gases, equilibrium, and acid-base chemistry. A diploma exam worth 50% of the final course mark will be written.

Physics 30 - 5 credits
Prerequisite: Successful completion of Physics 20.
Math 20 Pure is recommended as a co-requisite.

Physics 30 is an in-depth science course designed for academic students who intend to pursue chemistry or physics related post secondary education. The theme of "interaction of matter and energy" is covered through topics such as electricity, magnetism, field theory, atom models, and wave/particle duality. A diploma exam worth 50% of the course mark will be written.
