Kick Start & Summer School 2018

Kick Start & Summer School at CBe-learn offers a variety of online courses that will help students catch up, keep up, and get ahead! Courses run during an accelerated period in June & July and students can earn their credits in a selection of core and complementary courses.

Students may register for one course only.

Registration ends: June 4 (Kick Start) and June 18 (Summer School).

Students should check in D2L by June 27 to make sure they have access to their Summer School course.

prerequisite

All students new to CBe-learn must successfully complete Pre-learn, the prerequisite online course, prior to the subject course start date. This course is offered at no cost, and students who require the course are automatically enrolled. Upon successful completion, the student will be granted one credit for e-Learning and Learning Management Systems (COM1255). Pre-learn must be completed by June 11 for Kick Start Courses, and by June 25 for Summer School Courses.

Summer School Last Day of Class: Closes 3:00 p.m. on June 25

Depending on the registration date, students may have early access to Pre-learn. There is no expectation to begin Pre-learn early. The end-date remains the same.

Kick Start courses

These courses are designed for students to finish quickly. Students begin in June, and will have all work completed by mid-July. These courses have due dates and benchmarks students must meet. Students must adhere to the schedule posted within the online course. All course work must be completed by the end of the term: July 13.

Students have the ability to work quickly, and finish all of their coursework as soon as possible. Many students may be able to finish their Kick Start course by the end of June.

summer school courses

All courses are facilitated online by CBE teachers. Students use a variety of tools within Desire2Learn to interact with their peers and teachers. Online courses have due dates and benchmarks students must meet. Students must adhere to the schedule posted within the online course. All course work, including writing final exams, must be completed by the end of the term: July 31.

Students may have access to their online course as early as June 28, but NO teacher will be available until July 3.

Kick Start: Get a head start on the summer!

Kick Start Courses Offered in 2018:

In Summer 2018, a select nunmber of courses are being offered as June Kick Start courses, so students can work ahead. Students are able to finish the Kick Start course in an accelerated time, and therefore have the ability to finish all aspects of this course before the end of June.

Kick Start courses run from June 14 – July 13. Students must register for these courses before June 4.

All of these courses (Online CTS, CALM, Psychology and Sociology) will also run in traditional Summer School (July 2 – July 31) for interested students.

Although courses are facilitated online, all of the core academic courses have mandatory onsite assessments and exams. Physical Education also has mandatory pre- and post- fitness assessments.

Special arrangements to proctor exams for students who are out of town, province or country will not be made. Students must adhere to the exam schedule posted within the online course.

Early or late exam writing requests will not be approved.

Registration ends: June 4 (Kick Start) and June 18 (Summer School).

Students may register for one course only.

The registration process is as follows:

  • CBe-learn students must call 403-777-7971 to make an appointment with Student Services to register for a Summer School course. Students under 18 need to have their parent / guardian present at registration.
  • CBE students currently attending another CBE high school must register through their guidance counsellor. Students will be responsible for providing their Prerequisite Information Form and Payment Form to CBe-learn for their course (either in-person, or via fax).
  • Grade nine students wanting to take a grade 10 course must meet with a guidance counsellor from the high school he/she will be attending in the fall. The high school will provide written approval, via a PIF (pre-requisite information) form, which can then be brought to CBe-learn to register in person. Grade 9 students can register for the following courses: Math 10-C, Math 10-3, Social 10-1, Social 10-2, ELA 10-1, ELA 10-2, Science 10, Science 14, PE 10 (3 credits).
  • Students outside of the CBE jurisdiction must register through their guidance counsellor / High School Administrator. Students will be responsible for providing their Prerequisite Information Form and Payment Form to CBe-learn for their course (either in-person, or via fax).

Forms Required:

Students under 18 years need to have their parent / guardian present at registration.

  • CBE and CBe-learn Students will be charged $65.00 for the Summer School course.
  • Out-of-jurisdiction, adult, out-of-province, and international students will be charged as follows:
    · Out-Of-Jurisdiction Student $150 for 5 credit course
    $90 for 3 credit course
    $30 for Pre-learn

    · Adult Student

    $480 for 5 credit course
    $295 for 3 credit course
    · Out of Province Student $870 per course
    · International Student $1150 for 5 credit course
    $690 for 3 credit course

Payments can be made in person at CBe-learn or via fax. Payments cannot be taken over the phone. We accept cash, debit and credit card. We cannot accept Visa Debit or cheques.

*Adult Student | Students who are 20 years of age or older as of September 1, 2017.

Students are responsible for attaining books and paying the textbook rental fee. Textbook rentals are available at the CBe-learn registration office. Click here for hours and location.

Book rental is $50, which will be refunded if the book is returned in good condition by the end of the Summer School course on July 31. Books are not rented to out-of-province or international students.

Texbooks are due back to CBe-learn at the end of the course: July 31, 2018.

Students will qualify for a 90% refund as long as the request for withdrawal form is received by June 25 for Kick Start or July 9 for Summer School. Any students who submit a request for withdrawal after this date will not be provided with a refund.
