Welding in Winning

winter 2011

November has been an exciting month in Welding (Fabrication)! State-of-the-art, cutting-edge practical and theoretical program delivery is now happening. November 24th saw our pre-apprenticeship students complete their SMAW (shielded metal arc welding) "in-house" practical exam. This was a key step in preparing them for the Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (AIT) 1st year practical welding examination, currently scheduled for December 21st at the AIT testing site in Calgary.

External evaluators were brought in to replicate the future test environment. Jonathan Allard, B Pressure Welder, Stéphan Deloof, Journeyman Welder from St. Mary's High School, and Conrad Parent, B Pressure Welder and Level 3 Welding Inspector from ATCO Gas, donated their time and expertise to evaluate the students' 1G, 2F, and 3F test welds.

That same night was the grade nine open house for prospective students and their parents. The combination of the practical welding exam and open house had all of our welders, most of their parents, a bunch of grade nine students, our external evaluators, and the entire staff celebrating our program's opening. Well worth the wait!
